Ispirato all’omonimo romanzo di Voltaire, Candide di Mark Ravenhill racconta lo spirito della nostra Europa contemporanea. Il protagonista, educato alla filosofia ottimista di Leibniz – secondo cui viviamo nel migliore dei mondi possibili –, attraversa un viaggio impossibile tra violenze, sopraffazioni e inganni.
Attraverso una serie di cortocircuiti scenici, Ravenhill mette in discussione l'idea stessa di progresso, mostrando un'umanità disorientata, bombardata da immagini di brutalità e sempre più incapace di distinguere tra reale e virtuale.
Eppure, la spinta a credere nel futuro, e nella possibilità di resistere, continua a sopravvivere.
